Grand Procession in Mulund on the Occasion of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti – A Symbol of Social Unity and Inspiration
Mulund, April 14 – A grand and inspiring procession was organized in Mulund to celebrate the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar with great enthusiasm and reverence. The magnificent event was led by Mr. Vinod Bhaurao Jadhav, Youth President of RPI (North-East Mumbai) and Founder-President of Navin Sankalp Pratishthan.
Various NGOs, community groups from all walks of life, youth volunteers, women’s groups, and countless followers, admirers, and supporters of Dr. Ambedkar came together to participate in this massive procession. It was not merely a parade, but a movement to promote Babasaheb’s ideals of unity, equality, and service within society.
Thousands of citizens participated wholeheartedly, offering their tributes and salutes to Dr. Ambedkar.
During the procession, free distribution of rose milkshakes, vada pav, and cold drinking water was arranged for all attendees. This initiative spread a beautiful message of service, brotherhood, and social responsibility.
People of all ages—women, youth, and elders—enthusiastically took part in the celebration, expressing their commitment to spreading Babasaheb’s vision among the masses. The procession, which included traditional attire, dhol-tasha performances, DJ music, powerful slogans, and inspirational posters, truly became a beacon of social awakening.
Mr. Vinod Bhaurao Jadhav’s leadership, vision, and social dedication made this event not only successful but deeply inspirational. His relentless efforts to bring Dr. Ambedkar’s thoughts and values to the younger generation have been widely appreciated and praised.
Establishment and Vision Mulund Vidya Mandir, established in 1957 by D.K. Mhatre Guruji (Damodar Kashinath Mhatre), stands as a beacon of education and inclusivity. Founded under The Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, the school was born during a time when Mulund was a small town with a modest population comprising both Marathi and Gujarati families. Recognizing the immense need for quality education, D.K. Mhatre Guruji took it upon himself to address this challenge.
Starting in a small rented house, the school relocated multiple times due to a lack of space and funds. However, Mhatre Guruji’s determination ensured that even underprivileged children received an education, irrespective of their financial or social status. His belief in equal education for all became the foundation of Mulund Vidya Mandir’s enduring legacy.
Acquisition of the School Land The school’s current land was acquired for ₹10,000, a substantial amount at the time. It took nearly a decade to repay the cost, reflecting the financial struggles of the post-independence era. Yet, D.K. Mhatre Guruji remained committed to his mission. Importantly, he did not name the school after himself or his family, choosing instead to reflect the identity of the locality. Thus, Mulund Vidya Mandir was born-a name that continues to symbolize the spirit and culture of Mulund.
Renaming Ceremony and Milestones On February 4, 2025, during the 95th birth anniversary of D.K. Mhatre Guruji, Mulund Vidya Mandir was officially renamed D.K. Mhatre (Guruji) Mulund Vidya Mandir. Unlike many renaming efforts that erase the original identity, this change preserved the existing name while adding D.K. Mhatre Guruji’s name-a testament to the family’s respect for his legacy and values.
On this occasion, the school’s auditorium was also named Sudha Mhatre Auditorium in recognition of Sudha Mhatre wife of Late D.K. Mhatre Guruji, who played an instrumental role in supporting the school while balancing family responsibilities. Her contributions alongside D.K. Mhatre Guruji laid a strong foundation for the institution’s growth.
Unveiling of the Busts As part of the celebration, half-bust statues of D.K. Mhatre Guruji and Sudha Mhatre were unveiled, symbolizing their lasting influence on the school and community.
Event Highlights The grand event was graced by several prominent dignitaries, including:
Shri Vinay Raut – Secretary, Vikas High School and Junior College, Vikhroli
Shri Nitin Maniar – Renowned Journalist from Mulund Power Next News & PNR NEWS
The event was presided over by Shri Shashank Mhatre, President of The Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, along with Vice President Shri Gopal Landge, Secretary Shri Appa More, and key members Shri Shirish Mhatre, Shardul Mhatre, Shampat Mhatre, and Shyamala Patil Madam. The presence of former and current principals, teachers, students, and well-wishers from various fields added to the grandeur of the celebration.
Cultural Performances Students from Mulund Vidya Mandir and Bombay Presidency International School (BPIS), Mulund presented a variety of cultural performances. Notably, a play depicting the inspiring life of D.K. Mhatre Guruji was staged by the students under the guidance of Dr. Nupur Shashank Mhatre and Principal Yogita Mhadgut, leaving the audience deeply moved.
Legacy and Future D.K. Mhatre Guruji’s philosophy of inclusive education continues to inspire the school’s growth and development. The Mhatre family remains dedicated to upholding his values, working tirelessly to strengthen the institution’s reputation and impact.
In an interview, Shashank Mhatre expressed his gratitude to parents for their unwavering support of Marathi Miduim (vernacular education), saying:
“In today’s era, where English convent schools are often the first choice for parents, we are proud of those who still cherish and respect their roots. A child’s learning begins with their mother tongue. If a child receives an education in their home language, it becomes easier for them to grasp concepts. Modern vernacular schools also offer strong foundations in English, Hindi, and other languages. We invite all parents to consider nurturing the next generation with Indian cultural and linguistic roots.”
Conclusion As D.K. Mhatre Mulund Vidya Mandir embarks on this new chapter, it remains committed to its core mission of providing inclusive, quality education while preserving its rich heritage. The Mhatre family and the school’s dedicated team continue to work toward setting new benchmarks in education for generations to come.
