Sanjay Dina Patil MP Urges Preservation of Salt Pan Lands in North-East Mumbai

New Delhi, July 30, 2024 – Today at Sansad Bhavan, Sanjay Dina Patil, Member of Parliament, addressed the Zero Hour session to raise urgent concerns about the 253 acres of salt pan lands in the North-East Mumbai Lok Sabha constituency.

Patil highlighted the Maharashtra state government's request for these lands to be repurposed for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. Despite the state government’s reclassification of these salt pans, removing them from the ‘wetlands’ category, Patil emphasized their crucial role in maintaining environmental balance and their designation within the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ).

Patil warned that any construction on these lands would pose serious threats to both the environment and public health. He firmly requested that no development should take place on these salt pans, stressing the need to preserve them to ensure the well-being of local residents and protect the environment.

The issue raised by Patil in the Lok Sabha highlights the ongoing debate between developmental projects and environmental conservation, calling for a balanced approach that prioritizes the long-term sustainability of the region.

ईशान्य मुंबई लोकसभा मतदार संघामध्ये जवळपास २५३ एकर मिठागरांच्या जागा आहेत. सदर जागा या धारावी पुनर्वसन प्रकल्पासाठी महाराष्ट्र शासनास हव्या आहेत आणि त्यासाठी त्यांनी अर्ज सुद्धा केंद्र सरकार कडे केलेला आहे. राज्य सरकारने ‘wet lands’ या वर्गवारीतून सॉल्ट पॅन म्हणजेच मिठागरे काढून टाकले असले तरीही या जमिनी पर्यावरण संतुलन राखण्यासाठी अत्यंत उपयुक्त आहेत आणि या जमिनी CRZ मध्ये येत आहेत. या जमिनींवरील बांधकामे निश्चितपणे पर्यावरण आणि शेवटी रहिवाशांच्या आरोग्यासाठी धोकादायक ठरणार आहेत. आज लोकसभेत शुन्य प्रहारात सहभाग घेतला. सदर मुद्धा उपस्थित करुन सदर जागांवर कोणत्याही प्रकारचे बांधकाम करण्यात येऊ नये अशी मागणी केली.

 New Delhi, July 30, 2024 – In a heartfelt address at the Sansad Bhavan today, Professor Varsha Eknath Gaikwad Member of Parliament, passionately requested the Speaker to confer the nation's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, upon the revered literary figure and Maharashtra Bhushan, Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe.

Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe, celebrated for his lifelong dedication to humanity and the fight against exploitation, has left an indelible mark on Indian literature and society. His works have inspired countless individuals to stand against social injustices and strive for a more equitable world.

In her speech, Prof. Gaikwad emphasized, "आपले उभे आयुष्य मानवतेसाठी व शोषणमुक्तीसाठी समर्पित करणारे साहित्यसम्राट, महाराष्ट्रभूषण लोकशाहीर अण्णाभाऊ साठे यांना देशाचा सर्वोच्च नागरी सन्मान अर्थात भारतरत्न पुरस्कार देण्यात यावा." She highlighted the importance of recognizing the contributions of such stalwarts to inspire future generations.

The request was met with widespread support from various members of the Lok Sabha, reflecting the profound respect and admiration that Annabhau Sathe commands across the nation.
