Urgent Call for BMC and Police Action Against Prestige Group After Devastating Wall Collapse at Lotus Hillview CHS

Mumbai, July 8, 2024 – The Lotus Hillview Cooperative Housing Society (CHS) in Model Town is in turmoil following the collapse of a wall due to heavy rains and the alleged negligence of the Prestige Group of Builders. The incident has resulted in extensive damage, including the total destruction of vehicles belonging to society members Mr. Anup Shah of A/103 and Mr. Manchanda of A/402.
The residents are now calling for immediate and decisive action from the BMC and the police to hold the Prestige Group accountable. Despite continuous follow-ups and site visits by senior officials from Prestige Group and their construction partner L&T since June, effective measures were not taken to prevent this disaster. The community’s patience has worn thin, and they demand justice.
"We have suffered insurmountable damage due to the sheer negligence of Prestige Group," said Mr. Sampath R, Secretary of Lotus Hillview CHS. "Our repeated warnings and requests for safety measures were blatantly ignored. This catastrophe was entirely avoidable, and it is imperative that those responsible face severe consequences."

In addition to the negligence of Prestige Group, the residents highlight the lack of initiative from the BMC as a significant contributing factor to the disaster. For years, the society has lodged formal complaints with the BMC building department, the fire brigade, and the Mulund police regarding issues such as the constant flow of sewage water from the Ghatipada complex into their compound, and the blockage of stormwater drainage with waste and debris. Despite these complaints, which have accumulated into a bulky file addressed to both the BMC headquarters and the T ward, no effective action was taken.

"We demand that the BMC and police take immediate action against Prestige Group," said another resident. "This is not just about financial compensation; it is about accountability and ensuring such negligence does not put more lives at risk. The BMC's failure to address our long-standing concerns about Ghatipada has exacerbated the situation."

The insurance agent representing the society has escalated the case, and the Prestige Group has been pressured into committing to bear the costs of repairing the damaged cars and undertaking necessary repairs and reconstruction. However, the residents argue that this is not enough. They demand a thorough investigation and stringent penalties for the lapses that led to this disaster.

The BMC has been involved at both the headquarters and T ward levels, but the society plans to escalate the issue further by involving newly elected MP, Corporator, and MLA to ensure their voices are heard and action is taken.
